A CHP officer is hospitalized after his patrol car overturned.
It happened on Highway 99 in Madera at Avenue 20 1/2 around 7:30 Wednesday night.
The officer was life-flighted to the hospital.
And part of Highway 99 was shut down for a short time.
The officer crashed while trying to stop a speeding motorcyclist.
The CHP patrol crashed as the officer was taking the off ramp from Highway 99 at Avenue 20 1/2 in Madera.
He was one of several officers trying to stop a motorcycle that was going as fast as 130 miles per hour on the highway.
"He was unsafely passing vehicles extremely high speed well over 100 mph. He may have even been passing on the shoulder. Definitely a danger to the motoring public," said Sgt. John Johnson with the CHP.
The motorcycle got off the highway at Avenue 20 1/2. The officer tried to follow but lost control. His patrol car rolled several times.
"It looks like he suffered a pretty serious blow to his head and was taken to CRMC as a precautionary measure," Sgt. Johnson said.
The officer was life-flighted to the hospital for treatment.
Highway 99 was closed for a short time so the medical helicopter could land.
The officer is a veteran, with at least five years experience with the CHP, the last year spent at the Madera office.
The accident comes six weeks after two Fresno CHP officers were killed in an accident on Highway 99 in Kingsburg when their patrol car overturned as they were responding to an accident.
The CHP is still looking for the motorcycle rider who fled from officers. He or she was last seen heading west on Highway 152. The motorcycle is a dark color or black sports bike. The rider was wearing a black helmet and black jacket.
If you have any information on the motorcycle rider you're asked to call the Madera CHP office.
