Fresno police are focused on neighborhoods where two murders occurred this weekend.
Two men were shot and killed in two hours.
The number of murders in the city is up this year. All other violent crimes are down. There have been seventeen murders compared to ten at this time last year.
A memorial now sits at Mayfair Drive and Normal Avenue in Central Fresno where 23-year-old Manuel Murrillo, a self-admitted Bulldog gang member was killed Saturday night.
He was found on the rain-soaked street. He'd been shot twice.
Officers are spending more time in this neighborhood after the murder. They're trying to determine the motive behind the gang fighting.
"Going to those specific locations to see if there's anything in that area that's promoting some of the violent crime that's occurred. If so we will stamp it out and move on to the next one," said Sgt. James Fowler with the Fresno Police Department.
They're looking for drug dealing, prostitution, the ways that gangs make their money. And often the source of the disputes.
Gang murders have increased this year. And they're happening not just at night, but in the morning and middle of the day.
14 out of the 17 murders this year have a connection to gangs. Either the suspect or victim are gang members or associates.
"We will try to, as best we can, anticipate where a retaliatory strike may be and that's in the instance of gang related shootings," Sgt. Fowler said.
At the memorial in central Fresno, we spoke with a man who says he's been a Bulldog gang member for more than 20 years. He calls the recent gang murders senseless. He said when he was young, gang members would settle an argument with their fists, not knives and guns.
Neighbors we spoke with were too afraid to go on camera. They didn't want to get involved or open themselves up to the possibility of retaliation.
