A driver crashed into a row of gas meters at the Lakeside Apartments in Northwest Fresno Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. when the resident was returning home from work and mistakenly hit the accelerator rather then the brake pedal.
16 apartment units had to be evacuated when it was discovered there was a gas leak following the accident.
The gas was shut off and residents were allowed to return but will not have gas service for 48 to 72 hours while repairs are made to the damaged gas lines and meters.
Apartment management is providing space heaters for the residents who wish to remain in the units while waiting for repairs.
