Riding Safe

All weekend, Fresno police have been concentrating on improving motorcycle safety on roadways.

Biker deaths and injuries in California have declined the last couple of years and cops want to see that trend continue.

The difficulty is that this police operation comes at a time when ridership could begin to rise due to soaring gas prices.

At Harley Davidson of Fresno, more and more pickup and SUV drivers have been coming in showing interest in buying a bike.

“They’re finding that their monthly payment for a Harley Davidson is lower than their monthly gas bill,” said Peggy Day, Sales Manager at Harley Davidson of Fresno.

However, Day always warns customers of the extra dangers they'll face while holding handlebars.

“You always have to ride as though you're invisible.  Chose a lane with the least resistance and try to look as large as possible.  If you see someone turning left, flash your lights or wave your hand,” said day.

In Fresno, from 2000 to 2011, 41 motorcyclists have crashed and died.  Last year was remarkably safe with just one motorcycle fatality.

Rider Erin Clay does her best to not become a statistic.

“It’s completely about being alert of what's going on around you.  Like coming up through an intersection because you don't have that protection of the metal or the air bags around you,” said Clay.

Veteran riders, Al and Anthony, offer beginners some important advice.

“If you're new to riding, take a class,” said Al.

“You learn a lot of things that you're not going to learn while you're out there that your buddy may forget to tell you,” said Anthony.

If you buy a bike from Harley Davidson they will pay for your motorcycle safety class.  The state also offers training programs.  To sign up, click the link above.
