Multiple fires kept crews busy in Fresno County on Thursday.

There were two serious fires in the City of Fresno and one in the Calwa area.

Late Thursday afternoon, firefighters were called to a two-alarm fire near the Chandler Airport in Southwest Fresno.

An elderly woman was rescued from her burning home. A neighbor says she saw smoke and an explosion. “When they went to try and pull the door open, the whole front corner just blew up and it spread it over to the second house. Then everything was just in flames and all the windows just started to explode as if it was something combustible,” said the neighbor.

The elderly woman was taken to the hospital with burns over 40% of her body.

No word yet on what started the fire.

Earlier in the day, an elderly man was rescued from a burning apartment in Fresno.

The fire happened around 11:00 a.m. at a senior citizens village on Willow and Butler. A total of three apartment units caught fire.

Fresno City worker Ronnie Watts was across the street from the fire when he heard calls for help. When he got there, he saw the elderly man inside the burning apartment, moaning. He put on his work gloves and went inside and pulled out the badly burned victim.

Someone else had previously tried to get to the victim. Edilberto Cabral, a soccer player at Fresno Pacific, kicked in a window but severely cut his leg on the broken glass. Cabral received 23 stitches to his leg.

The elderly victim is in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center. His dog died in the fire.

Before both of those fires, fire crews were called to a home in the Calwa area.

The blaze started in the home's attic just after 10:00 a.m.

No one was home when the fire started. Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles.

Fresno fire crews had to come in to help Cal Fire put out the blaze.
