The investigation continues into a deadly crash that killed two California Highway Patrol officers on Highway 99 early Monday morning.
The officers were responding to an accident near Kingsburg. They reportedly swerved to avoid a person in the road and lost control.
The CHP says both officers died instantly.
33-year-old Juan Gonzales of Fresno and 34-year-old Brian Law of Clovis were friends as well as colleagues.
Flags are flying at half staff at the CHP office in Fresno, where the officers were based.
And the two men were described as exceptional individuals.
Investigators worked for hours at the crash that killed CHP officers Juan Gonzalez and Brian Law.
The CHP says the officers were responding to a crash involving a wrong-way driver on Highway 99, but were told the accident was on the opposite side of the highway. They drove up on the accident and swerved to avoid a person standing in the road.
"The officers took evasive action to avoid striking any of the parties from the previous collision and lost control of the vehicle, struck the guardrail and severely crashed," said Captain Dave Paris with the California Highway Patrol.
We road with officer Gonzalez in 2012, on patrol for drunk drivers.
Colleagues say the two men were close friends who had trained together. Gonzalez had a girlfriend and was soon to be engaged.
He lived near Fresno State. And helped his neighbors with repairs around their house.
"Whenever she called he came over as soon as he could. And helped and fixed things and said 'no you don't need to pay me or give me anything,' just did it for us," said neighbor Robyn Wickland.
A student stopped to tell us that Gonzalez owned a rental unit. And reached out to international students at Fresno Stat to give them a place to stay. Even helping them move in and lending them his truck.
"He's a very gentle helpful man. Really caring. He helped me when I have trouble, when I have needs. He advised me on things. He's a really nice fella. It's pretty sad that he's not here any more to talk to," said student Jie Han Lee.
Both officers started their careers in the Bay Area.
Officer Shawn Wilkenfield knew Brian Law well. He says Law was quiet and confident. A man who loved his family and had moved to Fresno a little over a year ago to be closer to his wife and kids.
"It was hard enough when he left in the first place but now that he's gone forever it's even harder," Wilkenfield said.
The CHP is planning a joint memorial service for the two officers.
Representatives met with their families Monday afternoon to begin the arrangements. The date for the service has not yet been announced.
