Aiming to End Gun Violence

Local, state and federal agents are taking aim at ending gun violence in Fresno.  In a press conference Thursday, it was announced that those illegally possessing firearms are now being treated as an even bigger priority by police.  Officers are being repositioned to step up traffic stops and warrant searches throughout the city to help prevent the loss of innocent lives.

Fresno had 35 murders last year, which was the city's lowest total in 10 years.  However, the number of shootings so far this year compared to last is up 34%.  An alarming figure that's simply unacceptable.

“The violence in our city must stop and it will,” said Fresno Police Chief, Jerry Dyer.

Chief Dyer is confident that a strengthened alliance of officers and prosecutors will cut down on the number of violent, gun carrying thugs in Fresno.

“We’re going to target them whether they're in a vehicle, on the streets or in their homes,” said Chief Dyer.

Senseless shootings continue to injure and kill innocent bystanders.  Sarah Roberts is one example.  The 26-year old from Kerman was caught between gang gun fire on New Years Eve near Hughes and Dakota in northwest Fresno.

“I want you to know I miss my daughter,” said Rusty Roberts, Sarah’s father.

With emotions still visibly raw, Sarah’s father held it together and asked a huge favor of officers standing close by.

“Anything you people could do to help stop the gun violence I would appreciate it.  I thank you very much,” said Roberts.

The U.S. Attorney's office is backing this effort as well.

“We will be pursuing you as hard as we possibly can,” said U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner.

Wagner says he will go after the most dangerous gun offenders with federal charges, which is significant.

“First off, when you're sentenced federally, there's no early release,” explained Wagner.

A new public awareness campaign is being launched too.  You’ll soon see billboards and hear ads encouraging you to get involved by calling 621-GANG (4264) to report violent behavior.  The reward for credible tips is also being increased from $300 to $600.  However, the biggest payoff you should consider is having safer streets.

“It’s our community, our friends, family, neighbors and co-workers that we're striving to protect,” said Fresno county district attorney, Elizabeth Egan.

Chief Dyer now has one of his detectives strictly concentrating on guns.  Alfonso Castillo is digging deep into the history of every gun seized to make sure the suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
