Tulare County is using book machines to inspire kids to read in rural communities. The machines work just like vending machines but they're free to use. The newest one was installed at Alta Vista School just outside Porterville. It's an underserved community with high unemployment and the nearest library is out of reach. The machines give the kids 24/7 access to books with just the swipe of a library card. The county plans to install at least 3 more in other small towns and eventually phase out the underused bookmobile.
