Friday in southeast Fresno, firefighters and police officers were called out for a butane honey oil explosion at an apartment unit on Olive Ave.

Honey oil is an extremely potent form of THC people are smoking more frequently to get high.  To make it, marijuana is placed in a container and butane fumes are used to extract it.

Investigators say the suspect in this case was conducting the process outside on the patio.

"It found an ignition source caused a flash fire, ignited and burned him.  He received burn injuries of approximately 20% - 30% body surface area," said Battalion Chief Larry French, Fresno Fire Dept.

The reckless behavior left the woman living downstairs feeling both scared and upset.

"I do have small kids and a baby here, so whatever they were doing up there they didn't realize there's people underneath them and it could have been worse than what happened," said Lisa Castillo, a neighbor.

"As a result of an increased use and availability of cannabis in our communities, we see that we're responding to more of these types of incidents," said BC French.

Eight cases in the last six months to be exact and this is the third this week.  One of those explosions happened on Sunday at a home near Ashlan and Hughes.  It left a man with burns to 80% of his body.

"Maybe it's an internet sensation, who knows how this came about, but hopefully it lets everyone know this is very dangerous," said Lt. Phil Cooley.
