Shake-Up at Club Rome

It just celebrated one year in business, but there's been a shake up at Fresno's largest nightclub.  The former General Manager of Club Rome sat down with CBS47’S Rachel Azevedo for an exclusive interview.  Pino Borrelli says the owner fired him last Saturday night.  Things came to a head because Borrelli accused the owner of mishandling money.

Club Rome recently celebrated it's one year anniversary.  It survived an arson fire on opening day and a 15-day liquor license suspension in December because of too many violations.  But Borrelli doesn't think the club can survive much longer.

“It's a sickening situation because you have the best club in the valley, in my opinion, that makes tons of money, and everybody can make a great living off this place, but you have one guy ruining it for everybody,” said Borrelli.

He says that person ruining things is owner Dr. John Janda, who handles the club's finances.  Current club bouncer Chevo Montanez says several of his paychecks have bounced.

“One day I needed diapers for my kid.  She's being potty trained but she still didn't have diapers for two days,” said Chevo Montanez, a Club Rome employee.

Another doctor, Dr. Virender Kaleka loaned Janda $150,000 two years ago because Janda wanted to refurbish the club.  Kaleka says Janda never paid him back.  CBS47 verified Kaleka took Janda to court and won.

“He won't get away with it.  Eventually he will have to pay the money,” said Kaleka.

Money aside, Borrelli worries about safety at the club.  He says Janda put new people in charge of the door Saturday night.

“We noticed a crowd change immediately that night.  Me and some of the security said, ‘what's going on here, this is not right, this is not our normal crowd,’” said Borrelli.

Fresno police say that's the same night a man was shot to death in his car following a fight that started at Club Rome.  Borrelli also claims he owns the rights to the name "Club Rome," so Janda can't use it anymore.

“I don't see a future for the club,” said Borrelli.

CBS47 spoke to Janda on the phone, but he had no comment.
