The Central California Blood Center says its blood demand over the holidays was higher than expected, which has left the valley blood supply very low.
O-negative blood is at 17 percent of the projected need.
The Central California Blood Center is the sole provider of blood for 31 hospitals in a five-county area. During the holiday period, the center also had to donate some of its supply to Chicago area hospitals that are also running low. The snowstorm pummeling the northeast is also expected to put a hamper on blood donations and the supply.
