Wednesday marks the first night of Hanukkah. This year it is making history because it overlaps Thanksgiving. According to researchers it's the first time in 125 years and it will not happen again until the year 2070. The coincidence has lead to the catch phrase "Thanksgivukkah."
At Chabad of Fresno, Rabbi Levy Zirkinz explained how Hanukkah and Thanksgiving are actually quite similar.
"One of the meanings of Hanukkah is thanking God. The fundamental of Thanksgiving is thanking God for our wonderful country, crop and all the good things God gives us," said Rabbi Zirkinz.
So in the Jewish community, which holiday gets celebrated Thursday? Robbi Alexander says both.
"Do Thanksgiving when we would normally have it in the afternoon and light the Hanukkah candles when the sun goes down. So no conundrum at all," said Robbi Alexander.
People have jumped all over this holiday convergence. On the internet they are exchanging clever recipes and retailers are fabricating unique items like clothing.
What does Rabbi Zirkinz think? He says let the marketing of "Thanksgivukkah" continue.
"Because you know it's getting people aware of a holiday., of something higher. Thanking God for something. Let's thank God for something," said Rabbi Zirkinz.
The overlap of Hanukkah and Christmas happens much more frequently. It just occurred two years ago and will happen again in 2016.
