Animal cruelty charges have been filed against the owner of eleven horses found starving near Sanger.

47-year-old Jose Romo surrendered the horses to the SPCA.

Eight of the horses were moved to the shelter Wednesday. The remaining three will be transported on Thursday. All will be checked out by a veterinarian and nursed back to health.

The SPCA has rescued 50 starving horses in the last three months.

“If you have horses and you’re starting to get to the point where you may not be able to provide for them, please start to look for new homes for them,” said Beth Caffrey of the SPCA.

The SPCA is bracing for more cases like this because of the lack of rain. Fields that would normally be filled with grass are now just dirt. And if owners don’t provide food, there’s nothing to sustain the horses.

The SPCA is in desperate need of donations of hay for the rescued horses. If you can contribute hay or make a monetary donation, contact the SPCA at:
