Some good news for residents. The Valley Air District reports we're now in compliance with air quality standards.

A 29-million-dollar penatly issued from the Federal Government has businesses and residents footing a portion of the bill. If you own a vehicle, you'll see the charge on your vehicle registration.

Claudia Rodarte shows us that could be a thing of the past.

The steep penalty which was implemented back in 2010 for poor air quality could very soon be lifted. For the first time in history, the San Joaquin Valley is in compliance with the one hour o-zone standard in place by the Federal Clean Air Act.

The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District said we've been striving to meet this goal for the past two decades.

In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency classified the Valley as "extreme non-attainment" for this standard. Because we weren't in compliance, the Federal Governemnt cited us with a 29 million dollar penalty.

That penalty's being paid by businesses and it's also being paid by a $12 fee on all registered vehicles. The next step would be getting a compliance for the 8-hours ozone, which is a more health protective standard.

It could take up to a year for the EPA to make a decision on whether or not to lift the penalty.
