The Fresno Police Department released statistics on violent and property crime in the city on Thursday.
The department says year to date statistics for the city reveal that violent crime is down 8.3% while property crime has decreased 12%. They say the most notable decrease was seen in auto thefts. Since November 1st, there has been an average of 9.14 cars stolen per day, or a reduction of six cars per day. In comparison, the lowest number of cars stolen in the past 10 years was 8.9 cars per day which occurred in 2009.
Police say during the past 14 days, there has been a 30.1% reduction in auto theft as compared to the previous 14 days.
“This decrease can be directly attributed to pro-active police work and a cooperative effort between the police department and the sheriff’s ensuring the most prolific thieves are remain behind bars,” said Police Chief Jerry Dyer.
The city recently came to an agreement with Fresno County in which they have leased jail beds at the county jail which are currently occupied by five of the top ten auto thieves in Fresno.
