The Madera Unified School District’s Superintendent is expected speak about the death of a 14-year old girl Thursday morning.
The name of the freshman student at Madera South High School has not been released and an official cause has not been determined, but police say hot weather may have played a role.
The victim’s older brother discovered her in the backseat of his car Wednesday after school around 3 pm.
Police say she was taking a nap in the school’s parking lot prior to her class beginning. However, she never woke up, which caused her to be inside for a total of eight hours.
“This is just one of those that’s very tragic. There’s no answer to it, there’s no rhyme or reason. It’s extremely uncommon,” said Detective Daniel Foss of the Madera Police Dept.
The young man immediately drove her to Madera Community Hospital, but it was too late.
Investigators say her core body temperature was well in excess of a fatal level.
The teenager reportedly has no history of serious medical conditions. An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Friday.
