Homeless property labeled and stored

From the street, to storage: the City of Fresno is keeping homeless peoples' property for 90 days.

The day after another massive cleanup, Santa Clara and H Street is completely empty.  A city sweeper drives back and forth, getting the last bits of grime off the road.  It's a stark contrast from Monday morning, when city crews started clearing the last of three downtown Fresno encampments.

“Our employees have taken the utmost care to make sure we abide by the court's order,” said Bruce Rudd, Fresno City Manager.

Rudd says workers are documenting their every move and conversation.  It's all to avoid another costly lawsuit, on behalf of the homeless, for throwing out their possessions.  Now the homeless set aside their things for workers keep.  Everything is being saved in six large bins at a city yard on H and Calaveras.

Inside are bags and large items are marked with names, codes and where it came from.  There are pillows, cans of food, pots and pans and much more.  Inna Volkova of Central California Legal Services appreciates the effort, but says the city is missing the point.

“All the steps have been taken to avoid litigation, however Fresno has still done very little to help with the long term homeless issues going on,” said Volkova.

The city says non profits have helped about 200 people find shelter.  City council may allocate a million dollars for the cause.  As for homeless people’s property, they have three months to pick it up.  The city says, so far, no one has collected their things.
