Rim Fire Grows

Chainsaws echoed through the forest as hot shot crews cut fire lines trying to halt the fire that's growing out of control.

"Over the course of this past week it really blew up, it grew in one day over forty thousand acres and then thirty thousand and the next day it was 20,000 acres," said Rim Fire spokesman Trevor Augustino.

The Rim Fire has scorched more than one hundred and twenty-five thousand acres, leaving nearby homeowners wondering if they are next.

"In a matter of a couple hours it crossed three mountain ridges and was within a mountain ridge and a half of the lodge," said resident Cecilia Field.

A half dozen aircraft and more than twenty six hundred fire fighters are on the ground battling the wildfire and for the first time in days, fire crews think conditions may be starting to turn in their favor.

"We are taking advantage of the terrain; it is getting out of a lot of these canyons and shoots that we couldn't put firefighters in because of the fire activity," said Augustino.

The fire remains only five-percent contained and Governor Jerry Brown has officially declared a state of emergency.
