We're learning more about the suspect arrested for a carjacking in Las Vegas that resulted in the death of a local CHP officer.

29-year-old James Montgomery is in custody and faces a number of charges, including the murder of Jesus Magdaleno, a Visalia CHP officer.

Montgomery was arrested and it turns out he has ties to the Valley, living in Fresno from 2001 to 2011 and was also arrested in Madera County in 2009.

33-year-old Jesus Magdaleno of Visalia was killed when he and his brother-in-law, Felix Cruz, were thrown from the bed of his own pickup.

Instigators say Montgomery stole the truck Sunday as it idled at the valet of the Flamingo Hotel.

Magdaleno and Cruz were loading the truck and Cruz was in the bed when Montgomery started to drive off.

Magdaleno ran after the truck and jumped in the back with Cruz.

Officers say Montgomery sped through red lights before finally crashing, killing Magdaleno and critically injuring Cruz, who is not expected to survive.

Magdaleno was in Vegas celebrating his bachelor party and was set to marry his finance, Nicki, next month.
