When neighbors join forces with law enforcement, they feel united against crime.
"Everyone understands that if we stick together we keep crime away from us," said Murna Dicks who hosted a party at her home.
Police officers and firefighters popped in at Murna Dick's block party.
Neighbors were inspired by Al and Connie Whitfield who started neighborhood watch.
"This street had no crime at all. and it's still not on this
street, but Cherry...is just...too close," said Connie Whitfield.
Over the weekend, Cherry Street was the scene of a murder. A young man was shot and killed outside his home.
Last month, the bodies of a man and woman were found inside their house in an apparent double murder.
Suspects are now in custody and facing charges.'
Later that night, a 19-year old was shot and killed in her car outside La Quintta Inn, allegedly by her 25-year old ex boyfriend who police say drove around the hotel and shot himself.
But Tuesday, men and women in uniform dropped in to forge relationships, not to make arrests.
Ozzie Dominguez with the Visalia Police Department was there and said each officer stopped at four or five block parties.
Young ones also had fun at the parties...getting to know the importance of neighborhood involvement.
"If i know everybody I know who to go with, if I need to," said a young girl.
"I think it's good for her to be able to talk to police officers and
not be afraid of them," her mom said.
And it doesn't hurt to have the K-9 unit show up, this time to spread awarness.
Visalia has been hit with six murders this year, compared to five murders last year.
Police remind people to call in their tips.
