Twenty underweight horses in the Fresno County foothills are starting to look better thanks to help from the community.
Neighbors have been feeding the horses and a local feed store is collecting donations.
Meanwhile, the Central California SPCA is investigate the case as possible animal neglect.
Neighbors say the horses on the 13 acre lot near Prather look a lot better but many still look underweight, with hip bones and rib cages showing.
Neighbor Dudley Robertson says the horses are not starving now because neighbors have been feeding them, dropping off bails of hay day and night, but it's a temporary fix. "It's gonna take 80 tons of hay to feed them for a year and there's just no way this community has that kind of money," said Robertson.
Blake Ricken owns A-1 Feed, a feed store east of Clovis. Ricken delivered 45 bails of hay on Saturday, donated by one of his customers.
Ricken spoke briefly with the woman who owns the horses and says she fell on hard times. "It's heartbreaking to see the lady, she's appreciative, I mean she's in tears when we showed up with all the hay."
The SPCA has also visited the owner and is investigating the case as possible animal neglect.
