Fresno State President John Welty and other university leaders testified in Sacramento about campus “Use of Force” policies.
It was a hearing about protests on college campuses and how they're handled by campus police departments.
It's the first time state lawmakers have weighed in since that pepper spray incident at U.C. Davis last month. Occupy demonstrators were also beaten with batons at U.C. Berkeley.
President Welty said, "We recognize that tensions are rising. we must review policies and we must at the same time be prepared to make sure that student and others have the opportunity to peacefully dissent and participate in issues they are very concerned about."
The legislature is considering a statewide standard for how and when police can use force on California campuses.
