So far the blaze has burned over two-thousand acres. CBS47's Jack Highberger has more on the challenges fire fighters are facing.
As thick smoke from the aspen fire rolled through the kaiser wilderness, fire crews quickly assembled to fight the uncontained blaze.
There is very low fuel moisture and very steep and rugged terrain and accessibility is difficult. According to the us forest service, the fire was touched off by a lighting strike just below stump springs road on Tuesday. The fire quickly spread through dry trees and brush, forcing the evacuation of both the sample meadow and West Keiser camp grounds.
"This is the first year we've been smoked out." Said david Ivie who has been camping near Huntington Lake and says he's never seen a fire come this close. A layer of smoke obscured much of the water that is normally clear but Ivie says he plans to stay.
"no, I'm not worries about that. But it is fire and it is smoke and you have to worry about the potential of what it can do." He stated
Currently the forest service says no structures are threatened by the fire and the main concern is for wildlife fire resources including air units and dozers have been called in to help contain the blaze fueled by the weather.
"The biggest challenge is low moisture and the dry terrain." Says Henry Herrera from the US Forest Service.
