Crimes that Rise During Hot Weather

The hot weather doesn't keep suspected criminals off the street.

And officers say certain crimes go up when the mercury rises.

“We like to say when the temperature goes up the tempers go up. Because of the temperature being up people get more irritable and are more likely to fight and get into arguments,” said Officer Eloy Escareno with the Fresno Police Department.

In fact that's what brought officers to one home: a fight between a boyfriend and girlfriend.

And the boyfriend allegedly threatened to kill himself.

“The manner in which he was going to do it was he was going to lock himself up in the car due to the heat. And he was going to turn the engine off and roll up all the windows and he was going to wait until the heat overcame him,” officer Escareno said.

Officers know the heat can be deadly.

They check on those at risk.

And make sure they protect themselves against heat illness.

“I'll start drinking a lot more water before coming onto my shift. Because I know during my shift, because of the equipment that I wear and the fact that a lot of times we're out in the elements, I'm going to be sweating a lot more,” said Escareno

Motorcycle officer Trevor Shipman comes prepared for days like this, with a towel to wipe the perspiration and lots and lots of water.

“So what I have here is a frozen water, a frozen Gatorade, and then I have one other water that I didn't freeze so I don't have to wait for the ice to melt on it,” Shipman said.
