Rob Brown was in court Thursday morning, where he pleaded not guilty to felony assault charges.
Brown was arrested 2 weeks ago, accused of attacking his wife and threatening their children.
Days later, the couple publicly said the whole thing was blown out of proportion.
Brown's attorney, Marshall Hodgkins, says the family is in counseling. "The issue they're going to have to deal with over and above this criminal charge are tremendous and I think the judge, in recognition of that fact, fashioned a protective order that protects both sides," said Hodgkins.
Brown will be back in court July 23rd.
The chief is currently on paid leave from the city.
