Soldier Honored

It's a sound that a decade of war has made all too familiar.

And with every honorary salute, every gesture, it's easy to forget men like Thomas Mayberry, a man who asked for little but gave a lot in return.

"I'm really proud of what Thomas has done, he had always wanted to be in the army,” said Thomas Mayberry’s Uncle Steven Bell.

Mayberry’s life was cut short when he was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan in 2011. Now more than two years later, the Clovis VFW is making sure his sacrifice is never forgotten, adding his name to a memorial in front of Sandy's Country Junction in Clovis.

"It's just fitting that we give them the recognition so family and friends will be able to come by and say that's my nephew, that's my son," said Tom Gritton with the Clovis VFW.

And for Steven Bell, seeing his nephew's name carved into the black marble stone couldn't help but remind him of the little boy who dreamed of being in the army.

"I think Thomas would have been very honored. It was great to be able to see all the different families of military organizations out to celebrate Thomas’s life and his service for our country,” said
