Firefighters continue to battle the Carstens Fire in Mariposa County.
The area north of Triangle Road, between Midpines and Lushmeadows is now evacuated.
The Red Cross transformed a building at Mariposa Elementary School into an evacuation shelter and about 19 people had to stay overnight.
As of Monday morning, the fire had burned over 900 acres and was only 15% contained.
Resident Mike Morgan is a ham radio operator and was listening when he noticed the fire was getting closer to his home. "When I heard the knock on the door, I figured I knew what it was," said Morgan.
Morgan is staying at Mariposa Elementary and is helping out with fire communications in the area.
A US Forest Service Command Unit is on its way and Cal Fire says there are already about 500 crews fighting the blaze from around the state. "They're coming from as far away as Sacramento, and some from Southern California are coming in to help the incident and help do some, potentially some structure defense," said Cal Fire Division Chief Rich Drozen.
Those who are being evacuated can bring spall pets and animals to the shelter and larger livestock can be taken to the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.
