There is a new effort in the Valley to get kids to read more called the "Little Free Library."
They look like birdhouses and they give kids the seeds to success.
The little libraries work on the honor system, allowing kids to take the books to read and then return them on their own.
Fresno mom, Sharon Sanchez, thinks it's a great idea. Their gated community in North Fresno is fairly new and the developer recently built the library to give families convenience, education, and fun. "It's terrific! It's very positive for the kids... It saves me the trip from going to the actual library," said Sanchez.
The Little Free Library is becoming somewhat of a trend, with new libraries popping up around town and there's a website dedicated to helping communities build their own.
There is now a Little Free Library on wheels that just rolled out at Fresno's Storyland & Playland. General Manager Lynda Restovich said, "Children are encouraged to donate books but at the same time take a book out, find a shady spot in the park and sit down and read the book with their parents."
There is also one outside the Ronald McDonald House at Children's Hospital Central California. The facility is for parents to stay while their seriously ill children are being treated at the hospital, so parents and their children appreciate the books. "They're dealing with their child who could be undergoing any sort of treatment and just a few minutes with a book or puzzle, just to take mind off of what goes on is such a gift.," said Hannah Johnson with the Ronald McDonald House.
