Hit and run epidemic in Fresno

Police are still looking for the suspects who crashed into an apartment Tuesday night at Peach and Olive.  A two-year-old boy was injured but is out of the hospital today and expected to make a full recovery.

Frightening footage of Tuesday’s accident shows a Pontiac car all the way inside a Southeast Fresno apartment.  Neighbors say a two-year-old boy was rescued from the rubble by Johnny Castillo.

“All I heard was a hysterical woman crying, ‘my baby is in there’ so I ran in and the little two-year-old boy was pinned up against the wall,” said Castillo.

He says the boy wasn't breathing at first, but started crying after he picked him up.  It's the second major hit and run accident involving an innocent victim in the last week.  Thursday afternoon on McKinley and West, a 40-year-old woman was rescued after a car hit her in a driveway, pinning her partially underneath.  It was a miracle she only suffered a broken leg.

Sgt. Anthony Dewall says one out of every three accidents is a hit and run.  In the last year 800 accidents have been reported in Fresno, ranging from minor fender benders to fatal collisions.

“They could be driving under the influence of alcohol, they could have just robbed a bank, they could have just committed a petty theft at a store, but at the very least they're probably unlicensed or on a suspended license or they don't have insurance,” said Dewall.

Castillo calls the criminals responsible cowards.  He’s humbled by the hero comments being made about him, including one from the victim's older brother.

“I gave him a hug, and it made me feel good,” said Castillo.

No one has been arrested for the accident Tuesday night or Thursday afternoon.
