On Your Side: Protecting your car from extreme heat

As we make the transition from spring to summer, it's important to prepare your car for those hot days ahead.

Taking care of your car now will pay off when things really heat up.  When Mark Alvarez saw his truck acting up he acted fast.

"Mainly for safety. You know, there's a lot of cars out here in Fresno and you want to make sure your vehicle stops when it should and starts when it should," said Mark Alvarez, customer at Performance Tire.

Caryn Kilgore of Performance Tire in Fresno said keeping your radiator in tip top shape is a must.

"It protects your radiator from rusting, keeps your car from overheating, so you want to change your coolant every 30,000 miles," said Caryn Kilgore, owner of Performance Tire.

If the A/C in your car is blowing lukewarm air, you might have a leak or need to recharge your freon or it could be something else.

"A lot of people don't realize their cars have air conditioning filters," said Kilgore.

It's different from an oil filter and needs to be changed around once a year. Maintaining proper tire pressure is key.  Also, when you've hit more than 90,000 miles, it's advised you change your radiator hoses.

"The hot weather can cause those to expand and then their hose busts and your car breaks down," said Kilgore.

Alvarez says he carries precious cargo, his family, so he just wants to be sure they're safe.

"It just gives you peace of mind," said Alvarez.
