It's a one day food drive but for thousands of the valley’s needy, it's a day they have come to rely on.
"Most of these families are in dire need of just restocking their pantry and their refrigerator to feed their family," said Poverello House spokesman Katherine Weakland.
Last year more than 170 thousand pounds of non-perishable food was collected when the Poverello House joined forces with the national association of letter carriers to battle hunger here in the valley. Instead of mail, postal workers picked up food that helps support countless families who might otherwise go hungry.
"You know it's just a good feeling when you are rolling back to the office and the back of the truck is still heavy like it's full with mail but it's full with food," said postal worker Steve Lebet.
Organizers say the summer months are often the slowest for donations. Things drop off after big donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas, which makes this Saturday’s food drive that much more important.
“It's critical for us. It's our biggest food drive and it will really sustain us into the fall when donations pick back up," said Weakland.
If you would like to donate, simply place a bag of non-perishables by your mail box this Saturday and a mail carrier will pick it up.
