Since 1850, more than 1,500 California peace officers have died in the line of duty.

On Monday, Governor Jerry Brown joined law enforcement from around the state for the 37th annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony.

The event was held at the the California Peace Officers' Memorial in Sacramento.

Attorney General Kamala Harris spoke about the sacrifices made by the families of the fallen officers. "This is a difficult day, a day of grieving for lives cut short in the line of duty. It is a hard day for the friends and colleagues of these fallen officers. And it is especially painful for the families. You knew and loved these officers, as your spouse, your parent, your brother and your son. And to the honored families that are here today, there are no words to match the depth of your loss."

Last year, California lost two officers in the line of duty. So far this year, there have been six.
