Firefighters say now is the time to set up and practice a fire escape plan.

An emergency specialist for the Clovis Fire Department walked us through his home to lay it out.

First, a home should have an extinguisher, smoke alarms, and at least two clear exits.

Make sure doors and windows are clear of any clutter, debris or vegetation.

And always know where to go; out in the front yard for example.

“So if I can and I know it's safe…and the fire is on this side of the home, I'm going out through the garage. I now I have a fourth escape route,” said Chad Fitzgerald.

“We all meet and stay out of the house until everything is safe and clear,” said Susie Silva.
