As neighbors all over Fresno deal with crime, one of the city's best known areas is taking a hands on approach to tackling the problem.

CBS 47’s Lemor Abrams is live in the Tower District to show us how neighbors are making a good thing even better.

The Tower District's tag line is "escape the ordinary."

But ask anyone who live  in this Fresno jewel, some people visit to escape crime.

“I live in Southeast Fresno and I've seen a lot of crazy stuff there...gangs and drugs, said David Covarrubias.

David Covarrubias bike rides into tower to dine, and enjoy the entertainment and art scenes.

“I feel very comfortable riding down tower district, downtown, I mean there might be a couple weirdos here and there but that's just how they look you know,” he said.

Police say there are some troublemakers who hang out in Tower, including a guy who reportedly stole a woman's laptop and hit her friend over the head with a bottle.

The incident happened fifteen minutes before an accused prolific auto thief stabbed a man outside this liquor store Wednesday. It didn't take long for police to arrest him.

Police say the crimes are unrelated, and not reflective of a trend.

“What we don't want people to do is think that Tower is unsafe. We've been in Tower all day today trying to follow up on the robbery because that's the one that still has the outstanding suspect,” Fresno Police Lt. Anthony Martinez.

Police have been successful in attacking crime in the district.

Lt. Anthony Martinez pulled up the numbers for violent crime.

In the last month, there have been a couple robberies and three aggravated assaults…domestic-related.

“It’s not a bad area, and it's not anything that's plagued with any unreasonable crime that people need to avoid. I just had lunch in the Tower today,” said Lt. Martinez.

Lt. Martinez followed up his shift with a neighborhood watch meeting.

No ordinary meeting.

Residents across Fresno showed up to learn how to patrol the streets.

Debbie Washburn just moved to Tower District and is being proactive.

“I’m interested in our neighborhood, and the areas around it, and protecting for crime rates, to try to control it...and to make sure our people are safe,” said Debbie Washburn

That's how most business owners feel, and visitors like David who love everything they offer.
