Clovis citizens meet to talk about AB-109

Concerned they could be in danger, citizens gathered in Clovis to talk about how to handle inmates like Michael Wyatt, who until recently was walking their streets due to prison realignment.

"It's not that the sheriff doesn't want to keep them there but she can't," said Lynne Brown with Advocates for Public Safety.

Lynne Brown was one of many startled to hear about Wyatt, an AB-109er who is now back in jail but was twice picked up by police suspiciously lingering on and around Buchanan High School, an incident Brown and others hope will serve as a cautionary tale.

"Many of these realigned inmates have very, very serious and violent criminal histories and now they are becoming issues with counties being responsible for these people," said Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims.

Mims says AB-109 needs to be changed but in the meantime she is urging people to educate themselves on how it might affect their community.
