Grizzlies Behind on Payments

The Fresno Grizzlies played their home opener Thursday night, but money matters are also getting attention.

The team is feeling extra pressure to fill the stadium.    

The Grizzlies need the cash now more than ever.

CBS 47’s Lemor Abrams joins as live at ChukchansiPark to explain. 

Tickets to Thursday’s season opener sold fast but the grizzlies are counting on a sellout to start the season.

“It’s always a struggle. We’re a business in the Central Valley. I think any business is struggling in some sort of way,” said Chris Kutz of the Grizzlies.

“We want to fell like people share this common heritage with the ag industry, and make sure everyone feels like this is a community event,” said Kutz. 

The team needs the boost. The Grizzlies got behind on lease payments last year and now owe the city a big chunk of change.

“Right now the Grizzlies owe the City of Fresno $1.2 Million, however $250  of that is subject to credit once we’re able to validate invoices they’ve sent for maintenance improvements,” said Assistant City Manager Renena Smith. 

Fresno’s Assistant City Manager says the home team has a good relationship with the city and taxpayers shouldn’t worry.

“They’ll make it up through the rest of the year, just like they did in 2011…they brought their balance whole; we expect them to bring their 2012 balance whole soon,” Smith said. 

The Mayor is pleased they’re back… to play a major role in Downtown Redevelopment efforts.

“We’re going to have a great season out at ChukchansiPark. Looking forward to it!,” said Mayor Ashley Swearengin.
