Construction is underway for a massive shopping center in northwest Fresno located off Herndon Ave., just east of Golden State Blvd.

The Marketplace at El Paseo, as it will be known, is a $60 million project that encompasses 400,000 sq. ft.

The main store will be a Target.  Developer Gryphon Capital tells CBS47 other retailers moving in are:  Marshalls, Ross, Burlington Coat Factory, Old Navy, Tilly's and Petco.  Leases have been signed with close to 10 restaurants as well, but those names have not been released.

Construction had been put on hold nearly three years due to legal tie-ups.

“We've invested a significant amount of time and money into the project and we're excited it's finally underway,” said Chris Shane of Gryphon Capital.

The wide array of places to shop and eat will be good news for the economy because it will create jobs and generate tax money for the city.

“I think that development is a good thing.  I know that people in this part of our community have to drive a long distance to have access to shopping and other amenities, so residents are anxiously awaiting this project,” said Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin.

The Marketplace at El Paseo is scheduled to open in March 2014.  The developer plans to launch phase two soon after, which will add another 350,000 sq. ft. of shopping space.
