CA Lawmakers Take Aim at Bullet Sales

But many on both sides say will end up hurting law-abiding citizens, not criminals.

As stricter gun legislation moves through congress, many local gun stores are reporting record gun and ammo sales.

But Fresno's Gilmay Guns isn't in a comfort zone. 

Owners are worried a new bill in Sacramento aimed at monitoring ammo sales won't stop there.

“It's a way to go after the guns without going after the gun,” said Sharon Mayfield of Gilmay Guns.

Under AB-48, Sharon Mayfield would be required to check a buyer's ID, which she says she already does. 

And gun sellers would be required to report ammo sales to the Dept. of Justice.

Now they're going to want to keep track of how many rounds of ammo I have so if they decide you can't keep more than 1000 or 500 then they're going to come out because I have more than what I should have. 

The author of the bill says people would still be able to buy bullets... but from a licensed dealer.

If I'm buying ammunition say for you and you happen to be prohibited from owning a gun, then I'm basically putting the deadly material in your hands for you to be able to in effect hurt other people which is what we are trying to avoid,” said Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley). 

Mike Reynolds, author of the three strikes and you're out law... says AB-48 misses the target.

“The target is the criminal use of guns. That's where the penalties need to be increased and the emphasis needs to be placed,” said Reynolds.

Reynolds believes tough gun  laws are already in place .

But people need to be aware of them.

His billboards...posted across Fresno... aim to do just that.

“California's use a gun and you're done is pretty easy to understand. It's like three strikes and you're out...easy…you know if you use a gun, that's it baby,” said Reynolds.
