Road to Recovery for Abused Terrier

This little terrier is the only survivor of a case of animal abuse and neglect.

The terrier, nicknamed Steve Austin, suffered a broken jaw.

“So the patient's mouth sort of drifts to one side. So the goal is to realign everything,” said Dr. Marco Cervi, with Veterinary Specialty Services.

Dr. Cervi performed surgery on the terrier, putting a plate and rods into the dog's jaw to stabilize it.

Little Steve Austin, with his almost bionic parts, will hopefully be the happy ending to a very sad story.

He and three pit bulls were seized by the SPCA. The dogs were found at a rental home in Fresno. All were starving and dehydrated.

“At this time we don't have a legal owner. We do want to find out who the owner is so we can prosecute,” said Beth Caffrey with the SPCA.

One of the pit bulls died. The two others were sick and were euthanized.

Despite his broken jaw, little Steve Austin thrived in the attention at the shelter. Eager to please, eager for love.

“He discards his pain to get that love. So we want to make sure that he can get the love without having to live in pain,” Caffrey said.

It was a complicated surgery. And Steve has a long recovery still ahead of him.

“We expect eight weeks of recovery so it takes eight weeks for fractures to heal,” said Dr. Cervi.

The surgery is expensive. And the SPCA is seeking donations. If you can help, contact the SPCA in Fresno at www.CCSPCA.com.
