Local religions react to new pope

It's not just about Roman Catholics, other religions in Fresno eagerly watched every step of the way in support of the new pope.

 
As millions around the world watched for Pope Francis to take his throne.  Religious leaders in the Valley have also been watching events at the Vatican unfold.

We spoke with local Christian, Jewish and muslim leaders to get their unique perspective on the selection of the new pope.
Pastor Jim Franklin of Fresno's Cornerstone Church expresses optimism about the course of the Catholic Church.
 
"The importance of the Catholic Church not only in this nation but in the world and so to see them again with leadership, it always gives us excitement for that," said Franklin.

Rabbi Levy Zirkind of Chabad of Fresno cites biblical similarities betweeen
the origins Judaism and Christianity as the basis for a strong continued relationship.
 
"We want the entire religious community to be at peace with one another," said Rabbi Levy Zirkind.

The Imam of the Fresno Ismlamic Cultural Center has a long standing relationship with Catholic churches and says they share a lot of common beliefs.
 
"We visit their churches, they visit our mosque," said Seyed Ali Ghazvini of the Fresno Islamic Cultural Center.

He says the Islamic world had a strong relationship with the late Pope John Paul II, and he's hopeful that relationship will continue with Pope Francis.
 
Most religious leaders we spoke with say they will  keep the new pope in their prayers and sermons.

"We'll join our congregation as I'm sure as churches around the world of all different faiths will join them in celebration of their new leadership," said Pastor Franklin.
