Consul General in Valley Promoting Fresno, Israel Connection

Speaking to a group at Fresno State, he said Israel and Fresno have a lot in common and can benefit from one another.

When most people think of Israel they think of unrest in the Middle East.

So what does the Central Valley have in common with Israel?  

One word: agriculture.

After a period of turmoil in the Middle East, Israeli Consul General Andy David arrives in the valley. 

“I came to meet with people in Fresno to learn about their interests… what we can do together,” he said.

David's first trip to Fresno centered on understanding the region, and its similarities to Israel... especially when it comes to ag. 

“I know there's some challenges when it comes to water, how to better agriculture...some academic cooperation,” said David.

History Student Jazmine Schoonmaker was fascinated to learn about the links. 

“Our climate is similar and he suggested that maybe our future should include a reservoir such as Israel's,” she said.

FresnoState recently started a new Jewish Studies program, responding to a growing interest in Israel -US relations. 

“What has amazed me is the response. There's been such a wonderful response. so many people coming forward. They just didn't have a vehicle before,” said Jill Fields who founded the program.

The Jewish Federation of the Central Valley is providing the vehicle.

Inviting the Consul General was step one. 

 “I hope that this becomes a source of greater cooperation... and I hope the time comes when people say go dogs in Hebrew!” said Jewish Federation President Murray Farber.

For now, the focus remains on strengthening ties. 

President Obama is set to visit Israel next week.

“Many people in Israel are waiting for the American President to visit them. We love America,” said David.
