Two teenagers were killed in a car crash Monday night in Porterville.
The crash happened on Plano Street near Olive Avenue around 9:30 p.m.
Four people were riding in a car when police pulled them over because they suspected the driver was under the influence.
The 24-year-old driver got out of the car and was being taken into custody.
At that point, police say 18-year-old Elias Vargas climbed into the driver's seat and took off from the traffic stop, leaving his friend in the custody of the police.
At that point, police say 18-year-old Elias Vargas climbed into the driver's seat and took off from the traffic stop, leaving his friend in the custody of the police.
Minutes later, police got a report of a crash nearby. Vargas had lost control of the car, which rolled several times, before slamming into a tree.
Vargas was killed in crash but he wasn't the only one who died. A 15-year-old girl also died when she was ejected from the rolling vehicle.
An 18-year-old female passenger also suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Dominic Barteau of the Porterville Police Department said, "Worse case scenario... we're looking at DUI arrest, maybe even contributing alcohol to a minor. But all those offenses don't have any weight compared to having two lost lives."
