A passing Fresno Fire Battalion Chief spotted smoke from the road. He found a woman trying to put out the fire herself.
The fire happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning at California and Jameson near Kerman.
The firefighter says he spotted the large plumb of smoke while driving and stopped to investigate.
What he found was a woman attempting to put out the fire that had already gotten out of control.
Tony Escobedo with the Fresno Fire Department said, "He pulled her away from the fire. The fire was way beyond her ability to put it out. Pulled her away for her safety, shut down the LPG tanks and the electricity coming into this building and called for additional resources."
The woman was the only one at home at the time and was not injured.
Additional fire crews arrived in about 10 minutes were able to keep the fire spreading, but not before it destroyed her the home, her belongings and an SUV.
Fresno officials remind everyone to leave the home and never attempt to fight the fire yourself.
