Before Monday night, Alfonso Valles remembers Randy Davis as the guy he would wave to across the yard.
"Mr. Randy Davis to me was a nice guy," said Valles.
Things changed Monday when Valles grabbed his kids to take cover after he sawDavis charging sheriff’s deputies outside his home.
"Shots are ringing out, what do you do," said Valles.
That's when Chris Curtice with the Fresno County Sheriff's Department says a deputy opened fire.
"Mr. Davis yelled I'm going to kill you and ran towards the deputy," said Curtice.
When the deputies gun malfunctioned after one shot, another deputy opened fire killing the already bloody Davis who deputies say had been cutting himself.
"Right here, it all ended here in front," said Valles pointing to the street.
Curtice says things could have been different if another deputy hadn't been in the area.
"We were very lucky that it just so happened the second unit was a short distance away," he said.
