President Obama is asking congress to enact tough new gun controls. They include a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks and tight ammo restrictions.  Valley lawmakers aren't buying it.

"I'm very concerned about these children being used as props and I think it needs to come to a stop," said local Congressman, Devin Nunes.

Congressman Nunes says the gun proposal is mostly political smoke and mirrors.

"It's meant to cause distraction to the American people to get them off the most important pressing issues which are the economic issues that face our country today," said Congressman Nunes.

New Valley Congressman, David Valadao also says the presidential gun package is a miss and that the core issue is mental illness. He states "What happened in Newtown was a national tragedy.  However, a lunatic's choice to brutally murder defenseless children reveals a problem much more complex than the number of bullets in the shoooter's gun."

Nunes agrees that the issue of mental ilnness needs to be addressed, but not at the federal level.

"It needs to be looked at by state and local governments," said Congressman Nunes.

Local lawmakers all seem to agree, in the end the will of the people should prevail, not necessarily the president's.

"I don't believe the president can change a law and I don't believe he even believes he can," said Congressman Nunes.
