As 86-year-old Juan Cedillo puts on his WWII hat, he reflects on where he came from, what led to being awarded a bronze star, and where he is today, picking up food at Manchester Mall.

“This is what I call here heaven,” said Cedillo.

He's one of hundreds of vets and residents benefiting from a day of service.  It’s a call to action on day off for many.

“When Martin Luther King talks about everybody can be great because everybody can serve, we just think the military community goes above and beyond what the rest of us are doing,” said Cathy Caples, CEO of Hands On Central California.

30,000 pounds of food from Community Food Bank are handed out by volunteers from Kaiser Permanente.  Inside the mall, Buchanan High School students make Valentine’s Day cards for deployed troops from the 144th fighter wing.

“One of my teachers, her son died, so it's good to help people that I feel close to,” said Tracy Liu, a Buchanan student.

Another big project in Fresno is also tackled by students, teachers and parents.  300 volunteers from Dailey, Wawona and Fresno High schools clean up Storyland.

Nearly 35 years after Dr. King's death, Valley recipients appreciate how his good deeds are still being carried out.
