Fifty-Five members of Fresno City College's wind ensemble delighted a crowd tonight with a taste of the music they'll feature at Carnegie Hall in New York.
"Carnegie is the pinnacle I think. If you were asked where would you like to perform once in your life it would probably be Carnegie Hall," Dale Engstrom, Fresno City College band director said.
Engstrom, was thrilled when he and his students were offered an invitation to play there.
"Waving my arms on the stage of some of the greatest musicians ever is going to be quite a thrill for myself and my students," Engstrom said.
The community purchased tickets and participated in a silent auction to help raise money for the trip this band will be taking, which carries a tab of about $100,000.
Margaret Jones is one supporter.
"I think it's very exciting for young people to see the world and New York. What other chance will they have otherwise?" Jones said.
Bass clarinet player, Blanca Marquez, has her family extremely proud.
"We've been band parents since high school, so we know that road," Joe Marquez said.
"Especially to take her to New York. That's so amazing. I'm really happy for her and supporting her anyway I can," Belen Marquez said.
For trumpet player, Jason Cruz, this is a dream come true.
"Because it's something I never thought of, it feels very unreal," Cruz said.
And with the big performance just 4 months away, one thought is always on his mind.
"I need to be practicing right now. If I'm awake and not doing anything else, then I need to prepare for that trip," Cruz said.
